Reported by: Jason Claspell Tuesday, Oct 6, 2009 @11:59am CDT The West Side Nut Club is a tradition for many residents.
The event is made possible each year thanks to hundreds of Nut Club members who work year round for the one week festival. Generation after generation visit the Fall Festival, and they have been doing it for almost a century It all began 88 years ago when the Nut Club's founding fathers wanted to do something nice for the community. Jim Will Sr. joined the club in 1963. His son, Jim Will Jr. joined several years later. Both Senior and Junior are past Chairmen of the Festival. The Will's aren't the only father and son team in the club. Dan Lewis is the Vice President of the club. He says it is a great way to bond with his son Ryan. Both father and son teams say working together as a family to help area organizations is a great feeling. They say they are glad their family tradition is making the community a better place. The West Side Nut Club gives more than 95-percent of its proceeds to local organizations. The club has given more than one million dollars to west side schools. |
