Reported by: Josh Breslow Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @07:42am CST Brenda Bergwitz walked into Congressman Ellsworth's office Thursday with a message.
"The taxpayers should not have to be paying for abortion," said Bergwitz. She's talking about an amendment Ellsworth wrote for the ten-year, 1.2-trillion-dollar version of the Healthcare Overhaul Bill. Bergwitz was one of many that delivered a letter to Ellworth asking to "withdraw your amendment." "We the people have elected our officials to go up there and take good care of us and instead they have let greed and other things come into place," said Bergwitz. Right to Life says the language in the bill would not change anything about abortion, but says it would result in an insurance plan operated by the federal government, funding abortions with federal money. "Unless it is explicitly excluded, funding for abortion will be happening with new healthcare reform legislation," said Mary Ellen Van Dyke with Vanderburgh County Right to Life. "Real pro-life folks back home will know that we are working to stop federal funding for abortions and I think we'll be successful in our tactics to get there," said Congressman Ellsworth. While Congressman Ellsworth says he believes the language is fluid, he is working with pro-life groups to make it even more clear. "If the language is not clear and satisfactory, that federal taxpayer dollars don't go to fund abortions, I won't vote for the rule and I won't vote for the final bill," said Ellsworth. Congressman Ellsworth says he will lead an effort to protect federal tax dollars from paying for abortion. He is a member of the House Pro-Life Caucus. Ellsworth says he has always voted pro-life on issues surrounding abortion and he doesn't plan to stop now. |
