(Corning, CA) -- A mother and son in Corning, California, have been arrested on suspicion of cashing the Social Security checks of the woman's mother after they allegedly cremated her in a makeshift backyard barbecue. Fifty-year-old Kathleen Allmond and 30-year-old Tony Ray were booked on suspicion of embezzlement, elder abuse and conspiracy. Officials say 84-year-old Ramona Allmond apparently died in December, and her body was burned in a concrete culvert where the family had cooked its Thanksgiving turkey. Kathleen Allmond told investigators she made a necklace with a portion of her mother's skull and posted a picture of herself wearing the necklace on her MySpace page. Apparent human bones and dental remains were recovered from the barbecue. Deputies were alerted to the case after a relative called and said he hadn't heard from his mother since December. Kathleen Allmond and her son lived with the victim, Ramona Allmond, who owned the home. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-10-15-08 0245CDT |
