(Princeton, NJ) -- Americans favor ending Saturday mail delivery instead of the government bailing out the U.S. Post Office. The results come from a recent Gallup poll that involved telephone interviews with more than one-thousand people. The findings also show Americans willing to sacrifice some conveniences in favor of the Postal Service closing a number of local branches. Over the last two years the U.S. Postal Service has lost nearly eight-billion dollars of revenue. The Postal Service has floated the idea of trimming one day of delivery, with Saturday or Tuesday mentioned most often. In the poll, 57-percent said they were in favor of canceling one day of delivery and closing post office branches. Twenty-seven-percent were for some government funding. Just 14-percent would be in favor of a substantial raise in stamp prices. The poll's findings also show that 61-percent of whites are in favor of service cutbacks, compared to 43-percent of non-white citizens. Also among those polled, 65-percent of Republicans backed service cutbacks, while 48-percent of Democrats did not. (Copyright 2009 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-02-17-09 0251CST |
