(New York, NY) -- Continuing its quest to boost the number of organic products it offers, Wal-Mart has bought 12-million-pounds of transitional cotton. That's the cotton product made while farmers are converting from traditional to organic, a process that takes about three years. The retail giant's Tara Raddohl said they made the buy because that's what they were hearing the market needed from suppliers and partners. Because it takes so long to change from traditional to organic farming with cotton, the farmers are having to pay the higher cost of making organic, but aren't able to sell it at the higher price yet. That's keeping some farmers from making the switch. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-04-08-08 0254CDT |
