(Sacramento, CA) California consumers would have to pay an additional 25 cents per bag if they want to use plastic bags under a bill in the state Assembly. AB 2829 would amend a state law that forbids cities and counties from imposing fees for carryout bags. Assemblyman Mike Davis says the bill is designed to curb the use of plastic bags and limit their impact on the ocean, wildlife and environment. The state would provide funding from the fees to local governments to fight littering. However, opponents say customers won't want to pay 25 cents a bag and will use paper bags instead. Assembly Natural Resource Committee will vote Monday on the bill. (Copyright 2007 Newsroom Solutions, LLC) Delivered by Newsroom Solutions RNS-04-11-08 0905CDT |
