    • Dress appropriately if going outdoors. Always wear a hat and place a scarf around your face. Use mittens instead of gloves and wear a tight fitting water and wind resistant coat. If you plan to be outdoors for an extended period of time wear layers.

    • If you must use alternate heat sources. Place space heaters at least three feet from anything that may catch fire. Check your smoke alarms and do not use candles for heat or light.

    • Elderly and Infants. Always keep plenty of extra blankets in the home if you have elderly or infants living with you. Eating well balanced meals will help you to stay warm. Do not drink alcohol or caffeine in cold weather they can cause the body to lose heat more rapidly.

    • Cold related illness or injury. Cold weather puts extra strain on the heart. If you have blood pressure or heart problems you should avoid over exerting your body or working out side.

      • Hypothermia: when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Signs and symptoms are confusion, dizziness and severe shivering.

      • Frost Bite: an injury caused by the freezing of body tissues. Signs and symptoms are gray or white skin discoloration and a numb, waxy feeling.
