breaking news
The Embra and Wabash rivers are finally below flood stage in Lawrence County, Illinois after two weeks of record high water. Homeowners were given the green light to go back to their homes Sunday after the water receded enough for traffic to pass through.
This area once was a relaxing place for families to spend time. Now that will be just a memory. Mary Jackson, and her neighbors returned home Sunday, after Lake Lawrence had some of the worst flooding in southeast Illinois. Now it leaves many to salvage the remainder of what once was a thriving community. Home and business owner, Jerry Hewitt lost a lot of personal belongings on his property, but he says hes lucky compared to some neighbors. "I talked to several, they said theyd bulldoze, I think theyre going to pack up and go." Both Mary and Jerry said things could of have been worse. Starting over may be the only thing that keeps these people looking forward, and not drowning in the past.
