The record flooding in Indiana and Illinois is now affecting the Ohio River. The US Coast Guard has closed the Ohio River from Mount Vernon, Indiana to Shawneetown, Illinois. The Coast Guard website says the strong flow from high water in the Wabash River has dumped silt, sand, and other debris into the shipping channel. That has made the Ohio River too shallow for commercial barges to operate safely. No word on when the river may re-open.
