Scientists Predict North Pole Will Melt Away This Summer
In what is one of the most dramatic and troubling impacts of global warming, scientists say arctic ice at the North Pole could completely melt away by the end of this summer.
Polar scientists say the thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced with huge swathes of thinner ice formed in a single year.
London newspaper "The Independent," reports recent satellite data indicates that ice is melting faster than last year, when there was an all-time record loss of summer sea ice at the Arctic.
Each summer, the sea ice melts before reforming again during the long Arctic winter. However, the loss of sea ice last year was so extensive, much of the Arctic Ocean became open water.
