YMCA officials say quick thinking by lifeguards on duty may have saved a young boys life. Staff and patrons at the Dunigan Family YMCA had a scare Friday afternoon around 2 oclock. It happened in one of the buildings most popular places - the swimming pool. YMCA spokesman Derrick Stewart says a young boy went under water, "When the lifeguard noticed the situation, she immediately responded by diving into the pool and immediately pulled the kid out. Another lifeguard responded. and then another lifeguard called the front desk which is our standard procedure." Stewart says that "standard procedure" may have saved the boys life, especially because the pool was full of kids, "It was during a time that we transitition from an open swim to a class. So the kids in the pool were part of both the open swim and the class. They were coming out of the water to begin their class sessions." Stewart says thanks to the lifeguards quick response, the boy didnt even need CPR. He did need some water cleared from his throat, but seems to be doing fine. "He does appear to be perfectly okay. Obviously a little bit shaken, its a difficult situaion, but it appears the process we have in place to respond to those situations was effective." Part of that process means always having a lifeguard on duty. Although he appeared to be okay, the boy was transported to St. Marys hospital for observation. The pool was closed immediately following the incident, but reopened just a few hours later.
