Jake Wilson spent the last three years dreaming of a starting spot on North Poseys varsity football team. Coaches say he started working towards that goal his freshman year, participating in off season weight training. He would likely have started as an offensive lineman this coming year, they say, if tragedy hadnt intervened Wednesday night.
Wilson and fellow junior Jacob Mayer were on their way home from weight training at the North Posey when the truck they were in was broad sided just 1/4 mile from school. Accident investigators say Mayer did not see an on coming truck before trying to cross Indiana State Road 165. Jake Wilson died from his injuries at 10:17 Thursday morning. Mayer was still hospitalized, though his condition was not released. Neither were wearing their seat belts.
Two passengers and a driver in the other vehicle were not seriously injured.
Teachers and coaches at North Posey say this death is hitting students hard. According to athletic director Virgil Ferguson, more than 12 high school students have died over the past 11 years.
Its having an affect on teachers, too.
"We have emotions just like the kids, you handle it the best you can," said football coach and teacher Joe Gengelbach.
