Pharmaceutical Giant Agrees To EPA Clean Air Upgrades
(Evansville) -- Pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb has agreed to make upgrades at its facilities in six states and Puerto Rico to resolve Clean Air Act violations.
Retiring or retrofitting 17 industrial refrigerations units by July of 2009 is expected to cost more than three-point-six-million-dollars.
The agreement filed in federal court in Evansville centers on the use of hydrochloroflurocarbons, which have been linked to depletion of the earths ozone layer.
The U.S. Department of Justice says Bristol-Myers Squibb conducted voluntary assessments of its 25 remaining facilities and reported Clean Air violations.
The company will pay 127-thousand-dollars in civil penalties to settle the matter.
The agreement is subject to court approval after a 30-day public comment period.
