Bus drivers get a crash course in assisting with emergency evacuations. The emergency management agency put on the orientation that instructs volunteers on their role in a disaster. This includes using buses in a tornado, chemical spill, or a flood to take injured victims out of harms way. The Emergency Management Director, Sherman Greer says these are lessons they learned after the November 2005 tornado. That disaster made it clear that more people need to have a way to evacuate disaster areas. Representatives from the citys fire department, ambulance service, and mental health department were also on hand to let the potential volunteers know what to expect. This is the first evacuation orientation but Greer says there may be more. He says it depends on the success of this one and whether there is more interest from volunteers.
