Water Shortage

By: LaTonya Stephens
Updated: June 15, 2007
Is a drought on the horizon for tri-state farmers? Thats the question some are asking in the area. A water shortage watch has been issued for 61 counties in Kentucky including Muhlenberg and Ohio counties. While parts of Indiana are in a stage one drought or designated as severely dry. Gibson county farmer Gary Seibert says corn crops are rolling up right now trying to protect themselves and thats the first sign of a potential drought. Cracked soil and varying colors of green also are signs. Seibert says it would take a two inch rain to turn the situation around. Even a one inch rain would help out a lot. If this lack of rain which started in May does not come by the 4th of July then the corn crop will be a total loss. Its a potential disaster that would effect the price of corn for consumers and the bottom line for farmers. The last big drought in the area was in 2002.
