300 Year Old Tree

SOME EVANSVILLE RESIDENTS ARE CONCERNED THAT THE DAYS OF ONE OF THE OLDEST TREES IN VANDERBURGH COUNTY ARE NUMBERED. THE TREE IS A BUR OAK ESTIMATED AT 300 YEARS OLD. IT IS IN VANDERBURGH COUNTY JUST OFF SAINT JOE AVENUE. NEIGHBORS SAY THEY ARE WORRIED THAT THE CONSTRUCTION OF APARTMENTS ON THE PROPERTY WILL HARM THE TREE. THEY ARE CONSIDERING PUTTING TOGETHER A PETITION DRIVE TO HELP PROTECT IT. TOM WESTFALL, WHO NOMINATED THE BUR OAK FOR THE EVANSVILLE - VANDERBURGH BIG TREE REGISTRY, HOPES THE DEVELOPER WILL MOVE THE BUILDINGS A LITTLE FARTHER AWAY. THE TREE IS ABOUT 86 FEET TALL AND ABOUT 18 FEET AROUND. ATTEMPTS TO REACH THE OWNER OF THE PROPERTY WERE UNSUCCESSFUL.
