The second round of spraying for mosquitos carrying west nile virus is cancelled tonight. The health department says it was too windy, but theyll try again tomorrow. The kids at Fairlawn Daycare Center love to play in water. They also play outside. Neither is harmful until you throw West Nile virus into the mix. "Its a big concern. Its a big concern." Center Director Carol Hodges says she had no idea mosquitos tested positive for the virus in the area. "There has not been a problem with mosquitos on our playground." But that doesnt mean theyre not around. The health department says they collect in storm sewer catch basins - very common on the southeast side. "We found three samples of mosquitos positive for west nile in two different locations in this area," says Justin Manning with the health department. They sprayed half the area Sunday. They hope to get the rest done Tuesday. "Well be south of Riverside Drive between Boeke and 41." You may think its been a dry hot summer why should I be worried about mosquitos and west nile actually the mosquito that carry the virus love this environment. "If we had a heavy rain it would clear out the storm sewer catch basins and we wouldnt be concerned." Instead theyre spraying and testing every week. "Even after we spray theres still a chance for west nile." They hope the process lowers the chances for west nile virus so the kids at fairlawn can play in the water without worry. The health department says everyone should apply reppelent and young kids or the elderly should stay in if possible.
