In tonights Family First, an in depth look at self esteem. The classroom is the place to learn, the place to raise your hand, to interact in class. But 7 years ago, youd never have seen this from Evans middle schooler Briauna Harris. She had a confidence problem. World renowned educator Dr. Joann Deak says low self esteem is so much more debilitating for girls than boys and so, its much more critical for girls to have great self esteem so they can cope with life. If theres one gift you can give a girl, its improving her self esteem. But thats the problem, self esteem must be earned, and thats a catch 22. The girls who have low self esteem are too afraid to try the things that will give them more of it. That was Briauna. But she joined the YMCAs diamonds program in elementary school. Its an after school program for inner city girls. She says they pushed her to do the positive things she wouldnt have done on her own, and when she decided to run for student council president. She had the confidence to give it a try. And she won! The girl who was once too afraid to speak is now setting her sights on becoming a psychologist or a pharmacist and she says she has what it takes to get there. And dont forget youre invited to come see Dr. Deak speak for free, the Girl Scouts Raintree Council are bringing her to town. Dr. Deak will be talking about how to use the latest brain research to help students succeed. Its Tuesday, September 18th. Dinner is served at 5:15. Dr. Deak speaks at 6:30. Bring your kids. Free child care too.
