The Marion, IL VA hospital is in the midst of a surgical staff review, requested by hospital staff. As that review progresses, the facility has placed a freeze on conducting complex surgeries, instead opting to refer patients in need of that kind of care to VA hospitals in Indianapolis, Louisville, or their local community.
A spokeswoman for the Marion facility says the review was prompted by a need to reevaluate staff levels as demand for VA care grows. Local veterans advocates worry that its really a signal that the entire network of VA facilities is understaffed.
There is no time line on when the review will be finished.
