Coal mining has taken its toll on the Western Kentucky landscape. Now the state is stepping in to help heal a scar that has lingered in Henderson County for 15 years. The remains of the former Green Coal Company strip mining pit are more than 100 feet deep and 18-hundred feet long in places. The company went bankrupt, and left the property without reclaiming it. A new company plans to mine near the former sight. Theyve been awarded a 1-point-9 million dollar contract to fill the open pits as part of the states abandoned mine lands program. The old mine land is located on Chaney Road east of Zion. The county has been trying for some time to find a solution to fill in the gaping holes.
