President Announces Upcoming Troop Reductions, Urges Congress To Support War
As the nation grows increasingly skeptical, President Bush addressed Americans tonight.
Bush said a free Iraq will deny al-Qaeda a safe haven and insisted that the "success of a free Iraq is critical to the security of the United States." Bush cited successes with the troop surge he ordered this year, and said that he expects to bring home several thousand U.S. troops from Iraq by Christmas.
Larger reductions are expected by next summer, bringing U.S. troop numbers to pre-surge levels.
He also urged Congress to continue supporting the ongoing war.
