National Beef Recall Issued Due To E.Coli Bacteria (Washington, DC) -- A national recall has been issued for more than 300,000 pounds of frozen ground beef for possible E.coli contamination. New Jersey-based Topps Meat Company issued the voluntary recall after several people became ill in the Northeast part of the country. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a statement saying a product sample of the frozen beef tested positive for the dangerous bacteria. The recall effects food service institutions in New York City and retailers across the U.S. Items of concern are labeled "Est. 9748" inside the USDA mark of inspection and have a sell by date of June 22nd, July 12th or July 23rd 2008. E.coli causes diarrhea and dehydration. Children, seniors and others with compromised immune systems are the most at risk.
