breaking news
Overnight storms and high winds hurt firefighters attempts to save an old Evansville Restaurant Thursday morning.
The city fire department is investigating the blaze at the Anitas diner building as arson.
The former building at 1105 Mary Street was vacant with no utilities.
Crews arrived on scene around 1 oclock.
The blaze began in the back of the building, but it didnt take long for flames to swallow it up entirely. It took the crews around 2 hours to put it out.
At one point, all firefighters had to stop their work and evacuate due to the weather.
While arson is their primary suspicion, the department is also in contact with the National Weather Service to rule out a lightning strike as the cause.
