Kellie Ennis says shes seen too much to stand by and watch any longer. Animal abuse and neglect, she says, is out of control in Pike County. In the wake of the discovery of several abandoned dogs near Winslow, Ennis decided to take action. She is collecting signatures as part of a petition drive that she hopes will compel county commissioners to fund a full time animal control office. Pike county has no such office presently.
"Theres just no one there for the animals," Ennis said. After one of her dogs was attacked by a roaming stray dog a few days ago, she called the county sheriffs department, which advised her that their only course of action was to issue a citation to the dogs suspected owner, if that owner could be found.
The cost of an animal control office is not something a staffer in the Pike County Commissioners office believes is in the budget presently. Ennis says shed like to see government funding, and support for the office provided by the collection of fees and fines. The Commissioners staffer says they are willing to listen to Ennis proposal, and take a look at the signatures shes collecting.
"The county is going to have to step up and voice their opinions if were going to get this thing going," Ennis said.
