Memorial Soccer

Saturdays championship win for the Memorial high school boys soccer team was a huge accomplishment for the team.
But what it means for the popularity of the sport is what some are talking about.
The boys soccer team came back from Indianapolis as state champions for the 11th time in the programs history.
Sunday the homecoming for the team was the sort of celebration usually reserved for sports like football.
But coach Bill Vieth, whose father helped start area soccer programs in the early 70s, thinks it is more popular than ever.
He says Saturday the stadium probably had four or five thousand people watching a high school soccer game where as 30 years ago there might have been 30 people watching the game.
The first official Indiana state championship game for soccer was held in 1994.
