Diabetes is an extremely serious disease that can lead to blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and amputation. Diabetes is often a silent disease because many people with elevated blood sugars have no symptoms that would alert them to seek medical attention. By the time diabetes is diagnosed, damage to the arteries, eyes, nerves, and kidneys may have been occurring for years.
RISK FACTORS:
being 45 years or older
being overweight
little or no activity
family history of diabetes
high blood pressure (at or above 140/90)
high-risk ethnic group (African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander)
women who have had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds at birth
What: FREE blood glucose screenings.
Theyre offered quarterly in Owensboro at the Diabetes Health Resource Center in cooperation with the Daviess County Diabetes Coalition.
