Overweight Truck Legislation

An Indiana State Senator wants to pass legislation cracking down on overweight trucks. State Senator Tom Wyss says the legislation would save lives and help preserve interstate roadways. He wants to staff vacant weigh stations and get county law enforcement agencies involved in efforts to track truck weights with portable scales. Brenda Tubbs is one of four motor carrier inspectors in the district tracking down overweight trucks. Inspector Tubbs is looks for vehicles that are overweight and for equipment violations. She says she writes citation for 8 to 15 overloaded trucks per month. An average Semi-trailer truck should not exceed 80 thousand pounds. A dump truck shouldnt weigh over 68-thousand pounds. The fines for carrying an overweight load can range from 250 dollars to 2,500 dollars.
