It was a very tough, frustrating evening for Vanderburgh County Republicans. Every Republican running in a contended race lost tonight. That leaves Jeff Kniese as the only Republican member of Evansvilles city council. Republican party chairman said looking at the way people voted, there wasnt much they could do. More than 4 thousand people voted a straight democratic ticket. Despite the dissapointment many are staying positive including at large contender Andrew Smith who was one of the most vocal during these races with his sewer before stadium campaign. "I can tell you Im not going away. Im going to stay involved. I dont know what that means but Ill stay involved," says Smith. The Republicans say another big problem was not having a big name on the ticket. They were not supporting republican candidate for mayor David Nixon. He lost by the largest margain of the night. Despite that Nixon is sticking to his campaign moto, its all about the people. "The results are the voice of the people. We finished the course that is the positive part about it. Something good to come out of anything when you strive to help people so of thats what the people want let it be," says Nixon. It was not a night the Republicans expected but no one says theyre giving up. Most will go home relax for the next few weeks, few months, learn from what happened here and regroup for next year.
