US & World Summary Barry Bonds Indicted Over Steroids Testimony (San Francisco, CA) -- Home run king Barry Bonds broke one record but may be stuck with another. A federal grand jury in San Francisco yesterday indicted Bonds on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice, which could ultimately send him to prison. The five-count indictment alleges that Bonds lied to a federal grand jury that was investigating the use of steroids in Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is facing allegations that he cheated the state of New York out of millions of dollars in taxes by claiming to live in Florida instead of Manhattan. According to state tax officials, Jeter claimed to live in Florida to avoid paying New York City and state taxes between 2001 and 2003. --- Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Take On Clinton (Las Vegas, NV) -- Hillary Clinton went on the offensive last night during the debate between Democratic presidential candidates. The former First Lady defended herself by saying shes comfortable leaving the judgements about her positions and character up to the American people. Illinois Senator Barack Obama countered, saying Americans want straight answers to tough questions, and said Clinton isnt giving those answers. Former Senator John Edwards accused Clinton of speaking out of both sides of her mouth by saying she wants to end the Iraq war, but then saying shed keep troops in that country. --- House Votes On Electronic Surveillance Bill (Washington, DC) -- The Democratic-led House is taking on President Bush over privacy issues. The House yesterday voted to protect the privacy of Americans in the Presidents warrantless domestic spying program, while at the same time refusing to shield phone companies from lawsuits. The bill now heads to the Senate but faces a possible White House veto if it passes. The President says the measure would hamper electronic spying efforts and subject the U.S. to increased risks. --- Drug Smuggler Who Testified Against Agents Arrested (El Paso, Texas) -- A key witness against two jailed border patrol agents has himself been arrested. Accused drug smuggler Osvaldo Davila was shot by agents Jose Compean and Ignacio Ramos as Davila tried to flee across the border back into Mexico. The conviction of the border patrol agents for shooting the alleged drug smuggler raised an outcry when Davila wasnt immediately prosecuted for drug smuggling. Davila is now accused of two counts of possession with intent to distribute marijuana in September and October of 2005. --- Recalled "Aqua Dots" Toys Make Their Way Into Ads (Washington, DC) -- Some stores are still advertising recalled toys. Many would-be shoppers in Phoenix, Arizona were surprised to find a mailer from a local Toys R Us store that contained an add for Aqua Dots. Earlier this month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled an estimated four-million Aqua Dots toys, saying the Chinese-made toys may contain a chemical that can cause a coma or seizures if ingested. --- Emergency Hearing Today In Britney Spears Custody Case Another round in the Britney Spears-Kevin Federline custody battle is scheduled for today after Federlines attorneys asked for an emergency hearing. They want the court to address recently-surfaced video footage that allegedly shows Spears running a red light while her kids were in the car. Prior to the videotaped incident, Federlines lawyer had asked the court commissioner to prevent Britney from driving with the boys in the car. Spears attorney says his client was distracted by paparazzi during the incident and wasnt driving irresponsibly. --- "Family" Scrap Brewing Over Writers Strike A "Family" fight is brewing over FOX televisions decision to air "Family Guy" episodes without the participation of show mastermind Seth MacFarlane.
