Owensboro High Expansion Protest

By: LaTonya Stephens
Updated: December 13, 2007
Owensboro school board officials say its too late to save the historic Longfellow school building. The school board voted Thursday night to approve plans for Owensboro high schools twenty-two million dollar new gym and fine arts wing. They say tearing down Longfellow as part of the expansion was decided two years ago. This after architects said it would cost too much to keep it. But some residents showed up at the meeting hoping to stop it.....threatening to take legal action. Edward Markwell says he wants to save Longfellow and will get an injunction to stop it temporarily until it can be put on a voting ballot. Markwell says the building is an important part of the citys history. School board officials say their next step will be sending the expansion plans to frankfort for approval.
