Testimony in a federal death trial hinges on an Evansville pathologist who fled the country two years ago. Dr. John Heidingsfelder conducted the toxicology and other tests on 19 year old Jennifer Curry of West Frankfort, Illinois, near Marion, after she died in November 2005. A federal grand jury indicted a woman, Jennifer Krieger, with "knowingly and intentionally" giving the victim a gel patch containing a synthetic opiate 100-times more powerful than morphine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tom Leggans said the government was researching its options regarding Heidingsfelders testimony. Heidingsfelder worked out of the Evansville Coroners office on a contractual basis for about 18 years.
