Today starts the African-American celebration of Kwanzaa.
The celebration runs seven days.
The term Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili word meaning first fruits.
The first day of the celebration is called Umoja.
Its celebrated as a call for maintaining unity in the family, community, the race and the world.
The African-American cultural holiday was first celebrated on December 26th, 1966.
It was developed by University of California Professor Dr. Maulauna Karenga.
Today, Kwanzaa is recognized by millions of people throughout the world.
