You can expect a disagreement between Alcoa, Inc. and union miners over some of the bond money set aside for an old mine contaminated with toxic waste. .
Alcoa is asking the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to release $720,000 of the $4 million bond, but miners with the UMWA are expected to ask the DNR to keep holding the money.
They fear the money will be needed to clean up the toxic waste that was dumped in the late 1960s and 70s at the former Squaw Creek Mine, which is on Alcoa land.
The states Division of Reclamation will take up the request on January third from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Boonville Public Library.
The UMWA wants miners, residents, and government officials to attend.
