Should college applicants get criminal background checks?
Thats what some groups are asking after recent school shootings.
University of Evansville students, when asked were split on whether they felt it was a good idea.
But UE Enrollment Services Spokesperson Tom Bear says they prefer not to do criminal background checks but get feedback from guidance counselors.
Bear says it has worked well for them.
But since a student went on a shooting rampage at Virginia Tech The Security on Campus advocacy group is pushing for more.
They are pushing for colleges to check an applicants criminal history... to make sure every student stays safe.
At USI.. they just ask students if they have committed a felony or any act against an individual.
But at this point, say they also dont feel that a check of all students is necessary.
They like UE say they do a follow-up if theres a red flag and in the meantime focus on security measures they continue to put in place.
