“OUR HEROES” AWARDS AND ESSAY CONTEST KICK OFF

American Red Cross honoring community heroes Evansville, Ind. – Every year, the American Red Cross of Southwestern Indiana honors local people who have gone beyond what’s expected to help when help is needed. Some of the heroes honored in the past through the “Our Heroes” Campaign have risked their lives to help a stranger. Others have granted children’s last wishes or served in multiple tours of duty in war zones. “Our Heroes” are the core strength of this community. The American Red Cross of Southwestern Indiana finds it fitting to honor these community heroes because, like the Red Cross, “Our Heroes” will always be there. In order to identify the community heroes that deserve recognition, the Southwestern Indiana Chapter has a nomination process that is open to anyone. This year, nominations must be submitted to the chapter by February 4, 2008. There are 12 Hero Award categories: Youth; Educator; Group; Firefighter; Adult Rescue; Medical; Workplace; Law Enforcement; Military; Adult Role Model; Volunteer; and Hero of the Year. In addition to the Hero Awards, the Heroes Campaign always includes an essay contest for students grades K-12. Students are asked to write about their personal heroes. Those essays are also due to the Red Cross no later than February 4. Both nomination and essay award forms may be found online at www.evansvilleredcross.org.
