Indiana Summary: --- Elrod And Carson Vie For District 7 Seat (Indianapolis) -- The special election to fill the vacancy for Indiana U.S. House seat District 7 will see Republican Jon Elrod take on Democrat Andre Carson. Caucuses were held on Saturday and Sunday and the two candidates where then chosen as one seeks to win the area that was longtime represented by Julia Carson. She passed away in December after suffering from cancer. Andre Carson is her grandson. He and Elrod will first square off in the primary in May, then the General election in November. Elrod is an attorney and currently serving Indiana House District 97. --- One Person Killed At Indianapolis Strip Club (Indianapolis) -- One person was killed over the weekend outside an Indianapolis strip club. Police were called to Babes along Pendleton Pike early Saturday morning. Investigators say an argument erupted and 26-year-old Brenton Morris was shot in the chest. He died at the scene. The search continues for the suspect. --- Woman Attacked Outside Northeast Side Apartment (Indianapolis) -- A woman was attacked outside of her northeast side apartment during the weekend and now the community around there is on alert for dangerous activity. Investigators say the 23-year-old victim fought her attacker. The crime happened at Lakeshore Apartments near 82nd and Allisonville Road. The woman was thrown to the ground and was handcuffed. She was later treated at the hospital. The suspect has been described as a black male, 250 pounds wearing dark clothing. --- Here Are The Winning Numbers From Sundays Hoosier Lottery Daily Three-Evening: 0-1-7; Daily Four-Evening: 9-6-5-9; Lucky Five-Evening: 8-34-13-22-30. Kentucky Summary: (Louisville, KY) -- A Louisville man will be arraigned in court this morning on charges of murder. Robert Derrico is charged in connection with the death of Josephine Derrico. Officials say Josephine Derrico was found dead at her apartment near Rowan Street. Robert Derrico has been charged with murder, and tampering with physical evidence. (Louisville, KY) -- University of Louisville linebacker Lamar Myles has decided to forgo his senior season and declare for the National Football League Draft. Myles is a six-foot tall middle linebacker from Florida, and finished his junior season as the teams top tackler with 128 stops, including 76 solo tackles. He was a second team All-Conference performer last season. Myles also recorded a career best 22 tackles in a loss to Kentucky. (Bardstown, KY) -- A Bardstown restaurant owner has been arrested and charged with harboring illegal immigrants. China Buffet and Grill owner Ji Quan Yang was arrested last week by immigration and customs officers. Yang is accused of harboring illegal immigrants that he employed at his restaurant. Officials say he also let the immigrants live at a duplex that he owned. A federal affidavit claims the immigrants were forced to work 70 to 80-hours a week for very little pay. Yang is currently out of jail on bond. His case is expected to go to a federal jury by the end of the month. (Shepherdsville, KY) -- A former priest who was accused of sexual abuse charges has been ordered to serve probation for the rest of his sentence. Former Priest Daniel C. Clark is required to register as a sex offender if he continues to live in Kentucky. The move comes after Clarks guilty plea on two counts of first-degree sexual abuse involving two Bullitt County boys. Clark entered an Alford Plea in November. (Frankfort, KY) -- Water customers can now receive e-mail whenever their water supplier issues a boil-water advisory. The e-mail notifications will be issued automatically when an advisory is posted on the PSC website. Customers may then contact their water utility to determine how long the advisory is in effect. A list of boil-water advisories can be found at psc.ky.gov. (Louisville, KY) -- The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive this week. The event will be held Thursday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Spalding University on South 4th Street. All participants will be eligible to enter a regionwide drawing for a high-definition television. (Hardin County, KY) -- One person is listed in critical condition this morning after a car accident yesterday afternoon along Rineyville Road. Police say a car traveling on Hutcherson Lane was attempting to drive across Rineyville Road. That car struck another car on the passenger side causing it to leave the road and rollover. April Brawner of Eastview was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital. The driver of the car that hit Brawner was not injured. Illinois Summary: --- Governor, Daley Argue Over Senior Rides (Chicago) -- A seemingly endless war of words involving Governor Blagojevich continued over the weekend, with Mayor Daley the latest to jump in the fray. Daley criticized the Governors plan to give senior citizens free rides on buses and trains by saying the Governor is jeopardizing a done deal. He says Blagojevich could have put forth the idea any time in the last year, but instead waited until after funding for the CTA, Metra and Pace passed both houses of the legislature. Yesterday at a Far South Side church, Governor Blagojevich fired back. He says the Mayor needs to have "a little bit of hope", and says that when the legislature approves his version of the mass transit legislation "the sun is going to shine." Blagojevich says he expects the legislature to approve his amendatory veto sometime this week. --- Peterson Selling Story Of Life As Cop (Bolingbrook) -- Drew Peterson plans to sell his life story. The former Bolingbrook Police Sergeant whose wife Stacy has been missing since October sat down with two "Chicago Sun-Times" reporters last week. He was cordial, but apparently not very forthcoming about his past. Peterson says "the networks are paying" for information, so he couldnt give away details about his time on the force. His publicist also says theres a deal in the works to tell Petersons story. Peterson does say that since media interest has calmed down, hes able to almost "live a normal life." Peterson is considered a suspect in his wifes disappearance, and authorities have re-opened their investigation into the drowning of his third wife Kathleen Savio. --- Outgoing States Attorney Endorses Deputy As Successor (Chicago) -- Cook County States Attorney Dick Devine says his second-in-command should take his place. Devine endorsed First Assistant States Attorney Robert Milan yesterday, despite saying earlier he would stay out of the race. Devine is stepping aside after three terms in office. Milan is one of six Democratic candidates on the ballot in the February 5th primary. Devine chose Milan over the third person in the States Attorneys Offices chain of command, Chief Deputy Anita Alvarez. Other candidates are Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Chicago aldermen Tom Allen and Howard Brookins Junior, and attorney Tommy Brewer. The winner is likely to face Republican County Board member Tony Peraica in the general election. --- One Killed In I-55 Crash That Closed Roadway For Three Hours (Crest Hill) -- It took authorities about three hours to clean up after a fatal crash on Interstate 55 near Crest Hill late last night. Police say a northbound SUV crossed the median and crashed head-on into a semi just south of Illinois Highway 126 at about 10:30. Both sides of the roadway were completely shut down as police conducted their investigation. The male driver of the SUV died at the scene, but no information about his identity is available. --- French Investigators To Meet With Chicago Police On Loop Doctor Case (Chicago) -- French law enforcement officials will begin going over the 2006 stabbing death of a Loop dermatologist with Chicago authorities today. Investigators will be meeting all week with Cook County prosecutors and the family of Doctor David Cornbleet. Its the next step in the process of building a case against Hans Peterson, a suspect in Cornbleets murder. Peterson allegedly surrendered to French authorities on the island of Saint Martin in August, but they have so far refused to extradite him to the United States to face trial. The Chicago talks are aimed at helping the French determine whether Peterson should face prosecution under their judicial system. --- 12-Year-Old Murder Case Finally Going To Trial (Waukegan) -- Twelve years after allegedly murdering a millionaire and his wife at their Barrington Hills mansion, Peter Hommerson will go on trial this week. Marvin and Kay Lichtman were found dead in the ashes of the burned-down estate on January 23rd, 1996. Authorities believe Hommerson, who also went by the names "Lajos Fernezci" and "Peter Hommer", shot both Lichtmans and set the house on fire. He then went on the run to Texas and Mexico. Police caught up with Hommerson in 2005 after tipsters watching "Americas Most Wanted" called authorities. If convicted, Hommerson could face life in prison but prosecutors will not seek the death penalty. --- Funding Announcement Planned For OHare Today (Chicago) -- Federal Aviation Administration officials will open their wallets during a trip to Chicago today. Senator Dick Durbin and Mayor Daley are scheduled to join representatives from the FAA at OHare International Airport this morning. Theyll make whats being termed as a "major" announcement regarding funding for OHares new air traffic control tower. That tower is part of the OHare Modernization Project. --- Woman Who Lived In U.S. For 17 Years Being Deported (Beverly) -- A French woman who moved to America to be with her paralyzed husband is being deported, and immigrations officials say theres nothing they can do. Corina Turcinovic now lives in Beverly, in McHenry County. The "Chicago Sun-Times" reports she came to the United States on a ten-year visa in 1990 to help her husband Maro, who was injured in a car accident while touring as a musician. Before Maro died in 2004 he applied for citizenship, but was denied because he could not go to immigration offices to be fingerprinted. Corina could no longer fend off deportation because of his death, and was arrested late last month. A spokesman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Department says its their job to enforce the laws as they are on the books, and not make exceptions. --- Likely Respiratory Illness Kills Brookfield Zoo Dolphin (Brookfield) -- The Brookfield Zoo says one of its young dolphins has died. Zoo officials say six-year-old Micco 1/81/8MEEK-oh3/83/8, an Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, died Sunday. Staff say a severe infection in his trachea was the likely cause. Officials say Micco first showed symptoms in December and medication seemed to be working, but the dolphin took a turn for the worse this weekend. The average Atlantic bottlenose lives into its 30s. --- Macys Cuts Impact Creator Of Famous Windows (Chicago) -- You may not know Amy Meadows, but youve probably seen her work. Meadows spent 25 years designing the famous windows and putting together the Great Tree at what was once Marshall Fields flagship store on State Street. That store is now owned by Macys, and Meadows is out of a job. The "Chicago Sun-Times" reports her position is one of about 100 Macys is eliminating after a disappointing holiday season.
