Komen Awards $500,000 For Local Programs

KOMEN GREATER EVANSVILLE AFFLIATE
AWARDS OVER $500,000 FOR LOCAL PROGRAMS
EVANSVILLE, IN
The Greater Evansville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded sixteen grants today totaling $502,520. The sixteen grants were made possible by net proceeds raised primarily from the 2007 Komen Evansville Race for the Cure®, Bowl for the Cure®, Hoops for the Cure® and other supporting fundraisers, individual and corporate donations. The grant recipient programs include breast health education, screening mammograms, diagnostic services and treatment initiatives. (A complete list of grant recipients is attached.) According to Sheila Seiler, Executive Director, “All 28 counties in our service area of Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky will benefit from this year’s programs. Since our first Race for the Cure® in 1998, over $4 million has been funded locally and over 300,000 people here in our community have received life-saving treatment, mammograms, diagnostic services or breast health education.” In addition to the $502,520 to be awarded to local programs, the Komen Greater Evansville Affiliate has also contributed $176,033 this year to the Komen Award and Research Grant Program. This program supports innovative breast cancer research and a variety of meritorious awards. The Greater Evansville Affiliate is part of the 125-member Affiliate network of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. Local Affiliates serve as the face and voice of Komen’s global breast cancer movement, mobilizing millions of everyday people through activities like the Komen Race for the Cure® Series, the world’s largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast cancer. 2008 Grants Funded
1. Deaconess Family Medicine Residency– “Neighbor to Neighbor” - $62,876.92 - In this project, the Deaconess Family Medicine Residency will collaborate with four Evansville neighborhood associations – Chain, Star, Jacobsville, and Lamasco – to provide education and breast cancer screening for low-income women.
2. Dubois-Pike-Warrick Economic Opportunity Committee, Inc. – “Tri-Cap Breast Cancer Program” - $99,360.00 - Tri-Cap, a private, not-for-profit agency serving low-income families in southwestern Indiana, will provide an organized patient navigator service to assist women who are newly or recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The program includes case management services, educational information, and payment treatment services for clients who are either underinsured or uninsured in the Affiliate area.
3. Good Samaritan Hospital –“Illiana Breast Health and Education-A Community Partnership”- $52,919.00 - This project will focus on providing screening mammograms, diagnostic follow-up, and breast health education to medically underserved women for Knox and surrounding counties. A special focus includes a Grass Roots Outreach and on-site breast health education for women in this rural low-income area.
4. Hamilton Memorial Hospital District - “Let’s Live!” - $3,857.39– This is a life-saving program designed to increase the awareness of breast cancer through screening for the detection of early stage breast cancer designed by the women of the Radiology Department at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. The target population focuses on two Southern Illinois counties; Hamilton and White, both of which are rural, elderly, low-income and medically underserved.
5. Perry County Memorial Hospital, Tell City, IN – “Our Turn: A Breast Health Program for Women” - $27,539.00 - This program serves under and uninsured women living and/or working in the rural areas of Perry County and Spencer County in Indiana, and Hancock County in Kentucky. Screening mammograms and educational programs will be provided, as well as diagnostic services.
6. St. Mary’s Foundation – “Sharing the Vision: Early Detection of Breast Cancer” - $97,765.77 - The “Sharing the Vision” grant will provide mammogram screenings, diagnosis, education and support services to women in six southwestern Indiana counties. The grant will also provide funding for a patient navigator to coordinate educational programs and outreach activities, diagnostic and support services for newly diagnosed patients.
7. The Foundation for Health– “Mammograms for Life” - $59003.22 - This program will provide educational information and screening mammograms to medically underserved women who reside in Daviess, Hancock, McLean, Union, Webster, and Henderson Counties in Kentucky.
8. University of Louisville Research Foundation, Inc. and Kentucky Cancer Program “Cultivando la Salud” - $28,058.00 – In an effort to reach Kentucky’s fastest growing minority population, this program proposes to improve the breast health of Hispanic women in eight Kentucky counties. The project goal is to provide Spanish-language, culturally appropriate breast cancer education and patient navigation for Hispanic women
9. Wabash County Health Department “Breast Health Lunch and Learn” - $35,436.96 – These “Lunch and Learn” breast health awareness sessions with an emphasis on routine breast health care will be provided in local factories, businesses and social settings. The programs will include a self-breast exam demonstration, as well as stress the importance of early detection through self-exam, clinical breast exam and annual screening mammography.
10. Richland Memorial Hospital – “A Place to Turn: Breast Health Financial Assistance Program” - $28,058.00 – This project will focus on providing screening mammograms and diagnostic follow-up for the medically underserved men and women of Richland, Lawrence, Edwards, Wabash & Wayne counties in Illinois who do not meet the guidelines for the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. A special focus includes a Grass Roots Outreach and on-site breast health education for this rural low-income area.
11. Sunny Day Hats with Love - $2,600.00 – This program will provide decorated hats free of charge through doctor offices and hospitals for breast cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment and have lost their hair. Community Pink Ribbon Grants The Community Pink Ribbon Grant will provide for screening mammograms and breast health education in the smaller or far-reaching communities of our 28-county service area. Fairfield Memorial Hospital Association, Fairfield, Illinois - $3,642.25 Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, Jasper, Indiana – $4,744.75 Family Health Clinic, Washington, Indiana – $3,617.75 Daviess Community Hospital, Washington, Indiana – $3,617.75 Lawrence County Memorial Hospital, Lawrenceville, Illinois – $3,642.25
