Local High School Students are Great Debaters: Six Qualify to National Tournament



Evansville, Indiana -- Six local students qualified to the National Forensic League National Tournament over this past weekend. The students competed on Friday and Saturday, January 18 & 19, at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. The students competed against the very best debaters in Central and Southern Indiana. Ben Wyatt & Zach Waggoner, North High School seniors, qualified in Policy Debate for the third consecutive year. Memorial High School students, Mitchell Grogg & Chris Graham, qualified to Nationals in Public Forum Debate, as did Boonville High students Matt Miller & Lynnzee Matthews. Several other students had excellent tournaments and finished as alternates to the National Tournament. In Policy Debate, Audra Goodson and Jacob Fark, sophomores at North High School, were the first alternates. Jaci Turner & Meghan Burke, freshmen from North, were the second alternates. Brandi Ball & Abby Brown, freshmen from North finished as third alternates. In Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Anna Dasher, a senior from Memorial, was the first alternate in the Hoosier Heartland District, while Megan Wagner, a senior from North, was the first alternate in the Hoosier Crossroads District. Samantha Lazlo, freshman at North, was the third alternate in Lincoln-Douglas Debate as well. North High School was the Hoosier Crossroads District Sweepstakes Champion amassing over 55 rounds of competition. The second place team from Kokomo High School finished with 42 rounds. Memorial High School finished third in the Hoosier Heartland District Sweepstakes Competition.
