Indianapolis, Ind. -- Drivers in Indiana may soon have an alternative to waiting in line at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles if a proposal by State Senator Earline Rogers (D-Gary) to allow online license renewal is approved by the General Assembly. Senate Bill 283 passed out of the Homeland Security, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs committee today by a vote of 7-0. The bill would permit a driver under 75 years of age with a valid license to renew an operator's, a motorcycle operator's, or a chauffeur's license by mail or online. “Online renewal of driver’s licenses is one of the most requested services the BMV hears from customers,” Rogers said. “If we can do it securely, then I think we should help people take care of this on their own time and at their convenience,” said Rogers. According to the bill, to be eligible for the new renewal options, a driver must have passed an eye examination at the previous renewal period and be a U.S. citizen. Suspended or expired licenses would be ineligible for renewal online or by mail. Similarly, if a driver has a change of address or name before renewal or is required to take a written exam for the renewal, those applications would still need to be done in person at a BMV branch. Rogers has been actively involved in negotiating for the return of a full-service BMV branch in Gary since that branch was closed in 2005. After Rogers and other local legislators responded with support for legislation ordering the BMV to open a full-service Gary branch, the BMV opened a partial-service branch in the city and has announced plans to open a full-service branch this spring.
