The EVSC school board, with Superintendent Dr. Vince Bertram leading the charge, agreed to change the format of high school graduation day starting during the 2008-2009 school year.
The proposal to shift graduation to the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend was tabled back in October amid concerns that a change for the 07-08 school year would not allow families enough time to change summer plans.
The goal of the change is to do away with overlapping ceremonies that prevent families from attending more than one ceremony at any given time. That caused problems for families with children or loved ones in multiple districts, because they often had to choose which commencement to attend.
At Mondays meeting, the board voted unanimously to make the shift starting in 2009. Commencement ceremonies will all be held on Saturday, May 23, 2009. That is the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and there remains some contention that holding the ceremonies then will still cause problems for families wishing to travel. Still, the board agreed to try the new approach. Board member Terry Gamblin said the change could alleviate years of problems, which his own family faced when he graduated from Reitz 40 years ago, and a cousin graduated from Bosse at the same time.
