Evansville s 163rd Field Artillery is spending the last few weeks stateside in intense training for their second deployment to Iraq. Their stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Soldiers say the days are long and hard, but this is the most realistic training theyve gone through yet. But realistic doesnt always equal a night at the Hilton. There are complaints about the living conditions at the base. Cold nights and overflowing toilets. Ft. Stewart Georgia plays host to soldiers from Evansvilles 163rd as they prepare for the real battle that lies ahead. Training for the mission takes most of their time. When their not in training soldiers try and catch some zs in a temporary camp called fort operating base, or F.O.B. Merez. The amenities are not quite as nice as what most are accustomed to at home. But for the army, Captain Greg Motz says, its not that bad. Massive tents house soldiers with the 163rd and personal space is at a minimum. There have been complaints about living conditions at F.O.B. Merez . Specifically toilets that overflow and a couple of nights where temperatures got down below freezing in the tents. Soldiers with a mix of ages and life experiences make up the unit. Though most wouldnt ditch their digs on camera Tuesday at nine Jason continues his exclusive report as he joins the troops on a battlefield thats about as close as you get to the real thing.
