Rebates, Tax Breaks, Building Plan Highlight Governors Latest Budget Pitch
(Springfield) -- Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich wants to give you some money, give businesses in the state a break, and jump start the states economy with a 25-billion-dollar road and bridge plan.
But his budget also includes a lot more state spending, cuts to most state agencies, and a universal health care plan paid for by the same businesses he hopes to give breaks to.
The Governor 58-billion-dollar budget is schizophrenic, preaching tax cuts on one side and tax increases on another.
The Governor says businesses need breaks to encourage growth.
But says companies still arent paying their fair share.
The headline grabber from the budget is the plan for 300-dollar rebates for families.
The Governor says one-point-three-million people would get checks, but he wont say where the state will get the money.
Blagojevich was more restrained than in years past, he did not take many swipes at lawmakers, but he did get a chilly reception from legislators in Springfield.
