Dont let your old kicks end up in the dump. We have a good use for them! They can be turned into new play surfaces and basketball courts for kids in low income areas. Between March and the end of school, wed like area schools to choose a 2 week period for a shoe drive. The shoes will be counted and added to shoes weve collected from other schools. We hope to raise 20,000 pairs by May. Most schools are choosing to put a big cardboard box at the office and decorate it with paper shoes. Some put boxes in individual classrooms. Then, for two weeks, students can recycle any kind of athletic shoe, as long as theres no metal or "red blinkies" in the soles. Were doing our drive in coordination with Nike. They are accepting any brand. It doesnt matter if the shoes are dirty, full of grass, or still have laces. They will take them all. When your shoe drive is over, a Fox crew will come collect them, and your school could be featured on the news. Contact Fox 7 Anchor Jackie Monroe for more information: jmonroe@wtvw.com
