Another dousing of ice has Tri-State residents searching for ways to melt away the mess. But rock salt ice melter is nowhere to be found. Stores in the greater Evansville area report selling their last bags and boxes of rock salt during last weeks storm. Now, those in need of a fix for slippery sidewalks, decks and steps are turning to 40 pound bags of water softener salt. The larger pellets may not be ideal, but they work just the same. "Well just try this and see what happens," said Evansville resident Brian Schmitt. He was worried about backing his truck out of his garage because his steep driveway was covered with a sheet of ice. Schmitt bought two bags of water softener salt from the St. Joseph Avenue Rural King. "Sodium is sodium. One way or another, its gonna do something," he said. The heavy demand for salt of any kind is now creating a strain on the supply of water softener pellets.
