Beef Recall Widens To Include Products Meat Was Used In
Now the scope of the nations biggest meat recall is even bigger.
According to "USA Today," the USDA has instructed food companies to destroy products containing any amount of the 143-million pounds of beef recalled last week.
That would include products like soups, sauces, and burritos.
One of the biggest concerns is canned products that may be consumed years after being made.
The Grocery Manufacturers of America says consumers can find out if their products contain the recalled beef by calling the manufacturer.
Californias Westland/Hallmark Meat recalled the beef after federal officials learned it had slaughtered cattle that couldnt walk, which can raise the risk of bacterial contamination.
Some food safety experts, however, say the USDAs latest instructions may be overkill given that there is no evidence the meat was contaminated and no reports of illness.
Some say the department may be reacting to criticism about lax enforcement.
