Daviess County Officer & K-9 win competition
Daviess County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Russ Day, who serves as School Resource Officer at Daviess County High School, participated in the 2008 Winter K-9 “Sniff Off” Narcotic Detection Trials competition sponsored by the American Police Canine Association. The event was hosted by the Bedford (Ind.) Police Department on March 1.
Deputy Day and his narcotics-detection dog Abby, a giant schnauzer, won first place at this event, competing against 26 other K-9 teams from Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.
In the winning contest, Abby had to navigate a series of “drug hides,” including five in vehicles, five in a house, and five concealed in about various containers.
The dogs had to alert within 18 inches of drugs concealed within the cars and the house, and correctly “alert” on the exact containers in which drugs were hidden. If a dog alerted on an area where no drugs were located, a 60-second penalty was imposed. The dog completing the trials with the lowest time was the winner.
Abby’s total time for all 15 hides was 3 minutes, 57 seconds. This was her first competition.
“She kicked tail,” Day said.
Officer Steve Morgan of the Owensboro Police Department came in third overall with his German shepherd, Bady, with a time of 6.02 minutes.
Deputy Day and Abby are on permanent assignment with the Daviess County Public Schools district, working to educate students on the dangers of drug abuse.
