Southern Illinois police are investigating a death in the Wabash River. Officers say a body was found in a car floating in the river.
Officials say an elderly female was found dead inside her car. It all happened at the fifth street boat ramp in Mount Carmel. According to a news release -- police were called out around 8 a.m. on a report that a car was found floating in the Wabash River.
When police arrived they found the car floating just a little ways south of the boat ramp. Emergency responders used cables and chains to pull the car back to the ramp -- and when they did -- they found the woman dead inside her vehicle.
The woman's identity is not being released at this time, as her family is still being notified. It is expected to be released Saturday morning.
The investigation is ongoing. The Mount Carmel Police Department, Fire Department and Wabash County coroner all refused to talk to Eyewitness News about the incident.
