Study: Both Parents Having Alzheimers Increases Risk For Offspring
(Washington, DC) -- New research shows a persons risk of developing Alzheimers increases greatly if both parents suffered from it.
In a study of over 100 families where both parents had the disease, 42-percent of offspring over 70 also developed it.
Researcher Dr. Thomas Bird said this was a greater number than expected at that age.
Bird said, quote, "I think it confirms that theres a strong genetic component in the disease and thats not a surprise." There is roughly a one in ten chance that the average person will develop the disease that causes memory loss and dementia.
The findings of this study are published in the "Archives of Neurology."
