Youth Group’s ‘Shantytown’ brings awareness of Homelessness in Tri-State
Press Release
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Newburgh, IN
St. John the Baptist Youth Group will be drawing attention to the problem of homelessness with their annual Shantytown event taking place at the Newburgh Food Pantry from March 14th – 16th. The event starts at 7 pm on March 14th and ends at 10 am on March 16th.
Youth Group members taking part in Shantytown will sleep in the lot next to the Newburgh Food Pantry. During the day, participants will go door to door in Newburgh neighborhoods as part of a food drive with proceeds benefiting the Newburgh Food Pantry. On Saturday, March 15, the group will serve lunch at the Evansville Rescue Mission.
In addition to the food drive and serving lunch at the Evansville Rescue Mission, the youth participating in Shantytown learn more about homelessness in our area, review some statistics and are shown a video on the homeless. The youth are limited to one personal item that they can bring along with them for the entire weekend.
For more information on Shantytown, please call Joe Hardesty, Youth Group Director, St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish at 812-853-6181.
