Report: SUV Rollover Deaths Could Have Been Prevented
Automakers may soon have to raise the roof on SUV safety standards.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is releasing a report today that concludes over 200 rollover deaths in 2006 could have been prevented if only the SUVs involved had stronger roofs.
"USA Today" reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not updated its roof strength standards since 1971 despite a significant increase in SUV sales.
Sport Utility Vehicles are more than twice as likely as cars to rollover.
The report indicates the 1996-to-2001 Ford Explorers are among the SUVs that have the weakest roofs.
